Small habits, big difference
A Parent's Guide to 11+ Prep
Practical, no-nonsense support for exam season, with simple habits that keep your child steady under pressure.
Managing exam nerves
A calm parent makes a calmer child.
Your own worry is contagious. Keep conversations about the 11+ matter-of-fact, and save the pep talks for effort and preparation, not the outcome itself.
Building a routine
Short, focused sessions beat marathon weekends.
Thirty to forty-five minutes a day, four or five times a week, builds stamina without burnout. Consistency matters far more than any single long session.
Choosing target schools
Match the school to the child, not the ranking.
Visit open days together and talk about what your child noticed. A school that fits their personality matters more than a name on a league table.
Spotting when to step in
Know the difference between a wobble and a gap.
A rough mock is normal. But if the same question type keeps tripping them up, targeted one-on-one attention closes that gap faster than more timed papers.
Keeping motivation up
Praise the process, not just the score.
Notice effort, focus, and improvement - not only correct answers. Children who feel seen for trying tend to push through the harder weeks of prep.
Protecting downtime
Rest is part of the preparation too.
Guard evenings and weekends for play and family time. A well-rested child concentrates better in every single session than an over-drilled one.
