Can my child have special arrangements for the Kent Test?
Possibly. Talk to the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) at your child’s primary school before you register, because the school has to make the request. Arrangements are not limited to children with an EHCP or a diagnosis, and should match the support your child normally has in class. For the test sat in September 2026 the school’s deadline was Wednesday 1 July 2026. A specialist panel decides, and there is no appeal.
Special arrangements
- If a disability or special educational need will affect how your child takes the test, talk to the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) at their primary school before you register. The school has to apply for any special arrangements.
- Special arrangements are not limited to children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or an official diagnosis. They should be in line with the support the child normally has in class.
- For the test sat in September 2026, the school had to send a request form and supporting evidence by Wednesday 1 July 2026. A specialist panel decides; its decision is final and there is no appeal.
- Requests received after the deadline are not processed, and special arrangements agreed for the Kent Test do not carry over to other tests.
- A child with an EHCP must still be registered for the Kent Test if the family wants a grammar school place. The school’s SENCO explains how to apply.
- A child with a severe visual impairment who cannot access the test papers can be assessed instead by a headteacher panel, which looks at their classwork and academic achievement.
- We could not find a list published by Kent County Council of the arrangements that can be given, such as extra time. The school’s SENCO is the person to ask.
