Small habits, big difference
A Parent's Guide to SATs Prep
Practical, no-nonsense support for Year 6, with simple habits that keep your child steady and school-ready.
Keeping perspective
SATs measure a moment, not your child's worth.
Schools use SATs mainly to plan teaching, not to judge your child. Keeping that framing at home takes real pressure off test week.
Building a routine
Little and often beats last-minute cramming.
Twenty to thirty minutes a day, alongside schoolwork, keeps skills fresh without adding strain. Consistency wins over intensity every time.
Staying aligned with school
Work with the classroom, not around it.
A quick check-in with the teacher on current topics helps home practice reinforce, not duplicate, what your child is already learning in class.
Spotting when to step in
Know the difference between a wobble and a gap.
Everyone has an off day. But if one subject consistently lags, a little extra one-on-one time on that specific skill helps more than general revision.
Keeping it positive
Celebrate progress, not just marks.
Notice effort, curiosity, and small improvements along the way. Children who feel encouraged tend to stay engaged right through to test week.
Protecting downtime
Rest and play are part of learning too.
Guard time for play, sport, and simply switching off. A well-rested child focuses better in class and performs better on the day than an over-drilled one.
