The Kent Test
Kent’s 11+ for grammar school entry: two multiple-choice papers sat at the start of Year 6, a pass mark of 345 in 2026, and the dates, schools and results that follow.
What exactly is the Kent Test?
Understanding the exam and its significance in your child’s academic journey.
The Kent Test is Kent County Council’s 11+: the test that decides whether a child is assessed suitable for a Kent grammar school. Children sit it in September, at the start of Year 6, after registering in June.
Each child gets a score for English, maths and reasoning, from 69 to 141. In 2026 a child needed a total of 345 or more, with no single score below 111. Being assessed suitable makes a child eligible; each grammar school then gives its places by its own rules.
What the test consists of
Exam Structure & Key Components
English & Maths
The first paper is a multiple-choice test with a section on English and a section on Maths. Each section takes 25 minutes.
Reasoning
The second paper is a multiple-choice test that assesses verbal, non-verbal, and spatial reasoning.
Writing Exercise
There is also a 40-minute writing exercise. It is not marked, but a headteacher panel may look at it at the headteacher assessment stage.
